If you’re setting goals…stop it.
It’s New Years Eve and chances are you’ve been over-spending, over-eating and over-drinking for the past few weeks, celebrating the season with friends, family, and co-workers. And now dammit, things are gonna change!
Well, let me share a little secret. If you’re serious about ACHIEVING goals, this is NOT the time to SET them. Don’t even think about it. Better to wait until your holiday hangover (in all its forms – physical, emotional, and financial) has passed and made way for clearer thinking. That said, here are a few tips to help speed the process.
- Get outside and get some fresh air. Begin by walking block a day, gradually building to 3km/day (or more) by the end of January. And don’t make excuses if it’s cold and snowy – we’re Canadians.
- Hydrate. Drinking lots of water is the key to better circulation, appetite suppression, increased energy and healthier skin, especially during these cold, dry winter months. Find a favourite water bottle, fill it, and keep it with you all day long.
- Purge. Get rid of the things that are cluttering your life. That goes for closets, desk drawers, desk tops, cupboards and cabinets, the garage, wherever. Pare your belongings down to those things that serve you, make you feel good, and/or add beauty to your life.
The process of effective goal setting is just that, a process that begins as it did for the early farmers who settled here. Before there could be a harvest, they first had to break the land by clearing the trees, picking rocks, and tilling the soil. All this ‘groundwork’ had to happen before the farmer planted a single seed.
So too you need to do some groundwork before you start writing down goals (planting seeds). Following the three simple steps I’ve outlined above will get you feeling better physically and mentally. At that point we’re ready to start setting…and achieving…some quality goals. It’s an amazing process, and I look forward to walking you through it step by step.
Trust me, 2017 is going to be an amazing year!
