Eyes In The Sky
What an awesome way to spend a full-moon Friday night!
I finally got to go for a ride-along in Air 1 last weekend, after selling rides on the cop chopper at dozens of charity auctions over the years, often for as much as $5,000.
When Police Chief Rod Knecht extended the invitation following last week’s hugely successful True Blue Gala Fundraising Auction, I jumped at the opportunity.
However, I must admit I was a bit disappointed that I couldn’t bring my own gun, nor was I allowed to keep the two beers stashed in my carry-on.
With its infrared cameras, night vision capability, and Sun Gun spotlight, I witnessed firsthand how Air 1 maintains a 98.9% success rate in apprehending bad guys.
Sgt. Murray Maschmeyer boasts that so far this year, average airborne response time has been 58 seconds, and that from a cold start on the ground the helicopter can be on a crime scene within 5 minutes. Now that’s impressive.
In addition to a very successful live auction at the True Blue Gala, we raised $110,000 in 4 minutes during a Cash Appeal, money that will seed the recently launched capital campaign to replace the 12-year old Air 1 with a new state-of-the-art police helicopter.
